In Kerala the flowers of this plant are commonly utilized to fill up extra spaces for the flower arrangements during Onam.
They come in many different colours, sometimes as combinations too.
Animals find this plant toxic and therefore stay away from it naturally.
But surprisingly this weed seems to posses many uses in many parts of the world
The extracts are used in herbal medicine for the treatment of various human diseases such as skin itches, leprosy, cancers, chicken pox, measles, asthma, ulcers, tumours, high blood pressure, tetanus, rheumatism etc
Ayurvedic Uses:
There are scientific findings that indicate that Lantana Camara can be used to heal wounds due to its fast-acting antiseptic and antimicrobial properties.According to the study Lantana Camara increases the rate of wound (sustained from burns) contraction by almost 90%.
A handful of the flower is ground with coconut oil and applied topically on the head to get relief from headache.
Insecticidal activity of essential oil
At a time when scientists are genetically modifying mosquitoes in a high-security labs it is essential that we go back into history and utilize the methods of our ancestors.
Known as a gene drive, mosquitoes modified to be incapable of passing on a particular virus are used to replace the existing population of insects over several generations, with the modified genes being passed on to all their offspring. ‘Molecular scissor’ editing technique CRISPR is what is being used to alter a gene known as ‘double-sex’ in the mosquitoes.
Now one may wonder what it eventually does.
What this does is, take away the biting ability of the female mosquito and make it infertile.
That is very cool to hear but the scary part is that the testing has entered a new phase with a large-scale release of genetically modified mosquitoes inside a facility in Terni, Italy.
The result will probably be positive for wiping out the whole batch. And it will inevitably move to the next step which is the release of the modified mosquitoes to places like Africa where malaria is rampant.
But any sane person can figure out that its definitely the natural as it were.
When there are plenty of natural sources of insect repellents, like the Lantana Camara, we wipe out a whole variety of insects.
The insect repellent properties of this beautiful herb/weed was known much before the advent of western medicine (synthetic)
Methanolic and ethanolic extracts of this herb have shown to contain larvicidal properties
Apart from repelling potentially harmful insects, Lantana Camara can also be used to prevent such insects from proceeding from the larval life stage.
Extracts from the leaves have been reported to have antimicrobial, fungicidal, insecticidal and nematicidal activity
There is a need to develop alternative approaches to control vector borne diseases mainly due to development of insect resistance to synthetic pesticides, high operational cost
and environmental pollution
A study was designed to find out an alternative to chemical insecticides against various species of insects and fungi with the botanicals
The potent insecticidal properties can be used in places where malaria is rampant.
This leaves of this herb when crushed and added to puddles or open drains where mosquitos breed can kill them off . It was also found that simply burning the dried leaves of the natural herb in a glass jar can turn it into a potent mosquito repellent.
Last but not least is the use of
Lantana Camara as an insect repellant for stored grains or even as a fumigant.
As with any herb caution must be used while on self treatment. In this case Lantana Camara is also known to cause itchiness to some on skin exposure to the leaf.
