The Sacred texts

The Upanishad

Hinduism is comprised of ancient sacred texts and literature that are vast and almost endless. A lot of our records have been plundered and destroyed at the hands of outsiders. It is now time to revive whats left of it. As part of this exercise we are trying to upload as many texts as we can for everyone to read through. We hope you find them useful.

The sacred texts

our sacred scriptures have been handed down orally as well as written down and compiled. There are 2 main parts to it.

Shruthi श्रुति and Smrithi स्मृति

“Shruthi” is that which has been heard from a higher being or divine Brahman. It is considered authorless.

“Smriti” is that which has been produced out of intellect or thought. Written on the basis of Shruthis, often with attribution to authors. They also contain Ithihasas like Ramayan and Mahabharatha as well as Suthras,Puranas,Dharma Shastras etc

Shruthi – Below is what forms part of Shruthi

  • Vedas ( Rig Veda,Sama Veda, Yajur Veda, Atharva Veda)
  • Samhita – The core part of the Vedas
  • Brahmana – The interpretation and commentaries on Samhita
  • Aranyaka – Forms the end part of Brahmana
  • Upanishad -Which is within the Aranyaka (except for Isha Upanisha)
