Yarrow – Scientific name- Achillea millefolium. It has been used traditionally in the treatment of inflammatory as well as gastro-intestinal disorders. It is an appetite inducing herb. It is now being studied for its wound healing properties, including treatment of skin inflammations.
The herb gets its scientific name from the famous Greek warrior Achilles who was known to use it to stop bleeding in his soldiers who were wounded in battle. Yarrow was also commonly used to stop nasal bleeding.
In China it is believed to balance the Yin and Yang energies.
Native Americans considered it a very important herb. It was chewed to help resolve toothaches. The infusions were used to cure ear aches.
Reduction of blood pressure, regulation of menstruation, helping of healing bleeding piles etc are its other common uses.
Most of all if you are wounded and need to stop the bleeding be assured if there is Yarrow nearby it will be useful in causing clotting and stop bleeding
This plant is used in ayurveda to balance Pitta dosha. It also reduces excess Kapha.
Other uses and recipe
Decoctions of Yarrow helps in treating inflammatory issues such as Haemorrhoids. It can also relax the smooth muscle of the intestines and uterus. Hay fever can be kept under control using the flowers.
For a decoction add a handful of leaves or flowers of Yarrow and boil for 3 to 4 minutes. Switch off the flame close and keep for 5 minutes. The resulting liquid will be light green. It can be had as a daily tea.
